Ukraine is facing 30,000 Russian soldiers near Kharkiv, and thousands of residents have been evacuated due to the intense fighting.
On Monday, the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council told ABC News that Russia is attacking with 30,000 of its 50,000 soldiers stationed at the border as the Kremlin resumes its northeast offensive.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an address Monday that he has ordered reinforcements to the region to confront Russian attacks. He claimed that the troops are receiving “all of the necessary firepower and forces,” and their “results are improving.”
“We are destroying the enemy’s infantry and armored vehicles,” Zelenskyy stated. “At the same time, we can clearly see how the enemy acts and their intent to stretch our forces thin.”
The address came after days of shelling in the region, including the border town of Vovchansk. On Monday, officials in Vovchansk stated that mortars and cluster bombs are destroying the town, and gunfights are taking place on the city’s northern outskirts.
The Kharkiv Regional Military Administration said on Monday that the fighting forced about 5,900 residents from their homes in the region to flee to Kharkiv. Officials reported that approximately 200 people remain in Vovchansk.
During his speech, Zelenskyy thanked local authorities for assisting in the evacuations “under constant Russian strikes.”
Russia’s military stated in an update Monday that it had “improved the tactical situation and delivered strikes” on Ukrainian troops and military hardware in the Kharkiv region, especially near Vovchansk.
