Police are investigating a shooting on the Delaware State University campus that killed an 18-year-old woman early Sunday, officials said.
Dover police are collaborating with officers from Delaware State University in the investigation of the gunshot, which occurred at 1:40 a.m. near Warren-Franklin Hall, a dormitory on campus, according to officials.
According to a Dover Police statement, university police responded to a call reporting shots fired and discovered a woman with a gunshot wound to her upper body.
Authorities said the unidentified woman lived in Wilmington, about 50 miles north of Delaware State University, and was not a student there.
Police said in the statement that they rendered aid to the victim and transported her to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment. “Tragically, the 18-year-old died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.”
Dover Police have opened a homicide investigation, and officers are working with Delaware State University Police on the case, officials said.
“The DSU Police Department and staff will continue to take all necessary actions to ensure the health and well-being of our campus community,” the department said.
Counseling services have been made available at the Tubman Laws Hall housing office, according to authorities. The campus remained closed on Sunday, and events were canceled with enhanced police patrols.
