Phase 2 of the SUN Bucks program is set to significantly broaden its reach, extending benefits to a greater number of children who are automatically eligible. This expansion includes kids who are recipients of Medicaid, FITAP, or KCSP benefits, as well as those who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. In late July, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) will dispatch new Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to these families, loaded with SUN Bucks. These funds can be utilized to purchase food that meets the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) criteria at stores that accept EBT cards. Families are reminded by DCFS that these benefits must be utilized within 122 days from the date they are added to the card to avoid forfeiture.
Looking ahead to Phase 3, the program will open up an application window for children who were not automatically enrolled in the first two phases. The ultimate goal of DCFS is to ensure that every eligible child in Louisiana has access to the SUN Bucks program. By providing this assistance, the program plays a crucial role in helping families combat hunger among children, especially during the summer months. This initiative underscores a steadfast commitment to supporting families throughout the state during these challenging times.
