CNN commentator Van Jones criticized Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for launching personal attacks on a fellow member of Congress during a House Oversight Committee hearing on Thursday night.
The committee hearing, which aimed to vote on whether Attorney General Merrick Garland should be held in contempt of Congress, descended into chaos when Greene made a remark about the appearance of Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) and her “fake eyelashes.”
“You seem to be a bit lost here,” Greene quipped at Crockett, in response to the Georgia Republican’s remarks about the trial involving former President Trump’s hush money. “Those fake eyelashes of yours might be interfering with your ability to comprehend what you’re reading.”
Jones responded to the incident by suggesting that certain lawmakers are merely seeking attention.
In an interview on CNN, Jones expressed his concerns about the declining standard of conduct among certain members of Congress. He specifically mentioned Marjorie Taylor Greene and others, criticizing their motivations for seeking fame rather than focusing on their responsibilities as elected officials.
According to a panel interview highlighted by Mediaite, the question arises as to why Marjorie Taylor Greene’s name is even known, considering she has never passed a bill, chaired a committee, or accomplished anything substantial. Instead, she is often seen as a provocateur and a clown, constantly seeking to provoke reactions and get under the skin of others.
During the hearing, Crockett responded to Greene’s comment about eyelashes by firing back with a remark seemingly aimed at her GOP colleague’s appearance, referring to her as a “bleach blonde bad-built butch build.” Crockett, along with many others, also criticized Greene for making comments that were perceived to have racial undertones.
Jones, although seemingly in agreement with the assessment, went on to express his opinion that she is “a disgrace” regardless of the intent behind her remarks.
He stated that she is a disgrace to the American people, regardless of whether she is racist or not. He also emphasized that she is a disgrace to Congress.
After the incident, a number of committee members expressed strong criticism towards the episode, describing it as “disgusting,” “embarrassing,” and akin to a “middle school fight.”
The committee, amidst the chaos, ultimately decided to hold Garland in contempt as a means of reprimanding him for not providing the audio recordings of President Biden for use in their impeachment investigation.
