Later this month, Vice President Kamala Harris is set to travel to Switzerland to participate in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, as announced by the White House.
At the international peace summit held on June 15th at the Burgenstock Resort in Lucerne, Switzerland, Harris will emphasize the United States’ dedication to assisting Ukraine in achieving a fair and enduring peace. The White House maintains that this commitment is rooted in the principles of the U.N. Charter, as well as Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The U.S. delegation participating in the summit will consist of the vice president and National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan. Coincidentally, on that very day, President Joe Biden is scheduled to attend a high-profile fundraiser in Los Angeles alongside former President Barack Obama, as well as renowned actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts.
The summit will be part of a series of extensive discussions and will commence right after the 50th G7 summit, scheduled to be held in Borgo Egnazia in Italy’s southern Puglia region from June 13 to 15.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously requested President Joe Biden to visit Switzerland, while also appealing to President Xi Jinping of China, asking both leaders to demonstrate their leadership in advancing peace.
During his visit to Switzerland, Harris will express his unwavering support for the people of Ukraine in their courageous efforts to defend themselves against the continuous acts of Russian aggression. The White House has emphasized the importance of this reaffirmation of support.
“I think the presence of President Biden is crucial for the peace summit as other leaders will closely observe the reaction of the United States,” expressed Zelensky on May 18th.
John Kirby, the National Security Communications Adviser, stood up for Biden’s decision to skip the June 15 summit by highlighting the Republican stalemate in Congress regarding military aid to Ukraine. Kirby emphasized that despite the political deadlock, Biden has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.
The White House made the announcement on Monday, coinciding with President Biden’s upcoming visit to France. This visit will be his first as president and is intended to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. During his visit, President Biden will have the honor of meeting and greeting veterans and family members of those who bravely landed on Omaha and Utah beaches on June 6, 1944, as part of the Allied invasion to liberate France and Europe from Nazi Germany.
According to Kirby, Joe Biden has been the most supportive leader of Ukraine globally. He emphasized that the visit of America’s first woman vice president and Sullivan to Lucerne is a testament to their commitment to represent the United States at the international table.
Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs expressed their satisfaction with Vice President Harris’ participation in the upcoming summit, as announced on Monday.
