On Tuesday, June 18, federal agents apprehended Jomar Crespo, 21, and Jose Rivera, 20, both of Waterbury, on suspicion of carjacking and associated offenses in New Haven County.
On the evening of June 14th, Crespo and Rivera approached the victim’s car from behind in Harlem while dressed in black clothing and facemasks, as per the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District.
According to reports, the two individuals reportedly wielded firearms during the incident. The weapons included a loaded .40-caliber pistol that had a Glock switch, essentially transforming it into a fully automatic machine gun.
The extended magazine of the second loaded pistol had the capacity to hold almost 30 rounds of ammunition.
According to prosecutors, Crespo and Rivera instructed the victim to hand over his keys before taking off in the stolen car. Surveillance footage captured them driving the vehicle shortly after the incident.
Fortunately, the NYPD sergeant who was involved in the incident did not sustain any injuries.
According to prosecutors, Crespo and Rivera were apprehended following a short pursuit on foot, during which they were observed disposing of the two firearms.
They pressed charges against both men for committing carjacking and carrying firearms, which included a machine gun, during and in connection with the carjacking.
If they are found guilty on both charges, they will be required to serve at least 30 years in federal prison, and there is a chance that they could be sentenced to life behind bars.
