Last week, people reported missing Mint Butterfield, the 16-year-old child of Slack cofounder Stewart Butterfield.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said in an April 28 statement that the adolescent was “located safe in San Francisco,” roughly an hour distant from their residence in Bolinas, Calif., where they were last seen on April 21. According to the office, investigators confirmed that the youngster had “voluntarily run away from their home” and had returned to their family’s custody.
Mint was discovered by San Francisco police in the white vehicle of a 26-year-old guy, who was later detained on suspicion of child kidnapping.
“Through this investigation, detectives learned Mint may have been associated with an adult friend, identified as Christopher “Kio” Dizefalo, a 26-year-old male out of San Francisco,” the statement added. “We identified a white van as belonging to DizWe spotted this van in San Francisco, suspecting Dizefalo and Mint were inside.ย SFPD officers contacted the van and its passengers, and they found Mint safe inside.
The press release went on to say, “After being interviewed by MCSO Detectives, Dizefalo was arrested for multiple criminal violations and was booked in the Marin County Jail, where his bail was set at $50,000.”
Dizefalo faces felony accusations of child abduction and unlawful sexual contact with a juvenile, as well as a misdemeanor charge of contributing to a minor’s delinquency, according to Marin County jail records obtained by E! News. He does not have a lawyer listed.
Mint’s mother, Caterina Fake, Stewart’s ex-wife and Flickr cofounder, reported the teenager’s disappearance to authorities on April 22. Her father, the former CEO of Slack, her mother, and Caterina’s partner, Jyri Engestrรถm, issued a joint statement after the child’s discovery.
“A heartfelt thanks to all the family, friends, volunteers, and strangers,” they stated in an email shared with the San Francisco Standard and other sites, “who called in tips and made this recovery possible.”
