During his four-year tenure in the White House, Bill Barr has alleged that Donald Trump frequently proposed the execution of his political opponents in moments of intense disagreement.
During an episode of The View in December, former White House communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin revealed that President Trump had once demanded the execution of a staff member who had leaked a story about his visit to a bunker during the Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020.
During a recent interview on CNN, former Attorney General Mr. Barr was questioned about the allegations.
Mr. Barr recalled how furious he was about that particular incident.
“I don’t recall him explicitly using the word ‘executing,’ but I wouldn’t argue against it, you know… The president would become angry and express sentiments like that. However, I highly doubt he would have followed through with such actions.”
During his presidency, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked if the 45th president had made comparable extreme statements on other occasions.
Despite the remarks, Mr. Barr shrugged off the criticism, suggesting that people may interpret Mr. Trump’s words too literally. However, he did acknowledge that such statements could indeed be made.
According to Mr. Barr, there were instances when he would make similar statements to vent his frustrations. However, it is important to note that these statements should not be taken literally every time he said them. Mr. Barr believes that ultimately, these statements would not be acted upon, and it was possible to reason with him.
According to the expert, the concern about President Trump becoming an autocrat and engaging in authoritarian actions is not significant.
“After having the opportunity to work with him and witness his actions firsthand, I don’t believe he is capable of resorting to the extreme measures of killing political rivals and similar acts.”
The Trump campaign has been approached by The Independent for comment regarding Mr. Barr’s remarks.
In September, there was a controversial incident involving Mr. Trump, where he caused a great deal of outrage by seemingly advocating for the execution of Mark Milley, the former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Mr. Trump accused Milley of committing treason.
“Mark Milley, who oversaw a highly flawed and disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, which resulted in the loss of many lives, abandonment of American citizens, and the surrendering of billions of dollars worth of advanced military equipment, is set to depart from the military next week,” stated Mr. Trump on Truth Social.
“This will be a time for all citizens of the USA to celebrate!” he exclaimed. “This individual turned out to be a complete disaster, supposedly collaborating with China to inform them about the President’s thoughts, as reported by the Fake News. Such an action is so terrible that in the past, the punishment for it would have been death!”
General Milley explained that he had to take necessary safety measures in response to the threatening comments.
As he campaigns to reclaim the White House in November, Mr. Trump has significantly increased his use of aggressive language and rhetoric.
The former president has faced criticism for using dehumanizing language towards migrants, drawing comparisons between himself and notorious mobster Al Capone, and sharing disturbing memes online. One such meme depicted President Joe Biden bound and gagged on the back of a MAGA pickup truck.
Mr. Barr, despite expressing concerns about Mr. Trump on multiple occasions, has announced that he will be casting his vote for him once again in the upcoming election.
“I have always maintained that when faced with two unfavorable options, it is my responsibility to choose the individual who I believe would cause the least damage to our nation,” he expressed in a recent interview with Fox News.
“In my opinion, I will be casting my vote for the Republican ticket and fully supporting it. I firmly believe that the progressive agenda poses a significant threat to our country and to democracy.”
In my opinion, continuing with the Biden administration would be national suicide, while Trump’s approach may be seen as playing Russian roulette.
Inevitably, Mr. Trump couldn’t resist responding to the endorsement with a cruel and taunting post about Mr. Barr on his Truth Social platform.
“Wow! I am amazed that former Attorney General Bill Barr, who disappointed many people by not investigating voter fraud in our country, has just endorsed me for President. This endorsement comes despite the fact that I previously referred to him as ‘weak, slow moving, lethargic, gutless, and lazy’ (as reported by the New York Post!).” Mr. Trump expressed in a social media post.
“I truly value Bill’s wholehearted endorsement, and as a result, I have decided to remove the word ‘lethargic’ from my previous statement. Thank you, Bill. MAGA2024!”
