House Democrats are currently investigating President Trump’s solicitation of $1 billion in campaign contributions from major oil companies.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) wrote a letter to the CEOs of eight energy companies and an oil lobbying group who were said to have attended a dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort with the former president last month.

According to reports from outlets like The Hill, it was stated that during the dinner, Trump made a request to the industry to raise $1 billion in support of his presidential campaign.

According to The Washington Post, providing him with the funds would be considered a lucrative opportunity for the industry. This is due to the significant amount of money that could be saved on taxes and regulations under his presidency.

According to The Hill, a source revealed that the discussion did not involve any kind of tit-for-tat agreement.

In his letters to the energy executives, Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, characterized the incident as a straightforward offer of quid pro quo.

According to a recent report by Politico, it has been revealed that the oil industry played a significant role in drafting executive orders for the former president to sign. In light of this information, Representative Raskin expressed concern that these companies may have actively participated in, or even facilitated, what he referred to as “Mr. Trump’s explicit corrupt bargain.”

As the Democrats are the minority party in the House, their investigative powers are somewhat limited. Nonetheless, the Maryland lawmaker has made a request to the companies, asking for information regarding any discussions pertaining to campaign contributions that took place during the dinner. Additionally, he has also requested any policy paperwork that the companies have prepared with the intention of sharing it with Trump.

The American Petroleum Institute, the oil and gas lobbying group, did not confirm whether it would share information with the committee. However, they emphasized their willingness to engage with candidates from various political backgrounds to discuss matters that are significant to the industry.
