Darius Morris, the former Los Angeles Lakers point guard, has died at the age of 33.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Darius Morris,” the team wrote in a post on Saturday, along with a photo of the former player.
Morris’ family confirmed his passing in a statement to TMZ on Saturday.
“With great sadness we announce the passing of our dearly beloved son, Darius Aaron Morris. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace,” the statement read.
TMZ reports that they found his body in the Los Angeles area. The Lakers and his family did not disclose the cause of death.
Before the Los Angeles Lakers drafted him in the second round in 2011, Morris was a standout at the University of Michigan. He went on to play for the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers, among other teams.
Morris went on to play professionally in China and France until retiring in 2019โ20, according to ESPN.
