Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Michael Whatley has called for party unity as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) threatens to compel Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) removal.

“We need to flip the Senate and strengthen our majority in the House. “We’re not going to do that unless we’re united,” Whatley told NBC News in an interview.

“We need to make sure that all of the Republicans understand the gravity of this election cycle, and they do, and we need to make sure that we are on the same page as we’re moving forward,” he said at the time.

Greene said she will push a vote on her looming motion to vacate a resolution against Johnson this week, raising concerns among some members of the party that such a move would destabilize the chamber and make Republicans appear incapable of functioning only months before the election.

More than a month ago, Greene introduced her motion to remove Johnson from office, but her current action is a significant step forward, requiring the House to review the measure within two legislative days of its activation this week.

Greene has strongly attacked Johnson for striking a number of compromises with Democrats on crucial legislation, including funding the government, granting billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, and reauthorizing the United States’ warrantless surveillance authority. She accused Johnson of “betraying” his conservative principlesโ€”aand GOP supporters in generalโ€”and warned that maintaining him in power would deter Republicans from voting in November, ensuring Democratic control of the House the following year.

Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), chair of the House Freedom Caucus, blasted Greene in an interview Sunday, saying, “She’s not acting in President Trump’s best interests. I don’t think this is a wise decision six months before an election. She has always been mostly concerned with herself.
