Merchan has found Trump in contempt of court on 10 separate occasions for violating the order. Just last week, he issued a stern warning to Trump, cautioning that he could potentially face imprisonment for any future violations.
In a recent incident, Donald Trump’s remarks regarding the composition of the jury have raised concerns. Judge Merchan, in a written order on May 6, expressed that Trump’s comments not only cast doubt on the fairness and credibility of the proceedings but also instilled fear for the safety of the jurors and their families.
In court last week, Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, requested that Merchan modify the gag order to grant Trump the opportunity to “publicly respond to the recent court proceedings.” Blanche was referring to the testimony given by Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who had received $130,000 in 2016 to keep quiet about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump, an allegation that he firmly denies.
Merchan refused Blanche’s request, stating that the order remains in effect “due to the nature of the attacks, the vitriol” from Trump.
