‘Tortured Poets’ takes number two slot for album sales

In terms of sales numbers, the album consisting of 31 tracks achieved a total of 2.61 million album units in the U.S. Out of this, 1.914 million units were from traditional album sales which include vinyls, CDs, cassettes, and digital downloads. It is worth mentioning that Billboard has changed its ranking criteria in 2014, shifting the focus from traditional album sales to overall album units. Since then, Adele and Swift have consistently dominated the charts, securing their spots among the top 10 biggest weeks.

    1. Adele: “25,” 3.482 million, Dec. 12, 2015
    2. Taylor Swift: “The Tortured Poets Department,” 2.61 million, May 4, 2024

    10. Taylor Swift: “Folklore,” 846,000, Aug. 8, 2020

According to Luminate, a company specializing in data and analytics for the entertainment industry, Adele’s album “25” stands out in the top 10 for having multiple weeks of successful album equivalent units sold.

‘My mind is blown.’

Taylor Swift expressed her gratitude to her fans on social media, acknowledging their overwhelming support for her album. She was amazed by the immense love shown, with a staggering 2.6 million listeners. Swift thanked her fans for listening, streaming, and embracing her album, Tortured Poets, in their lives. She felt completely overwhelmed by their response and was already excited to return to the tour, but their incredible support made her even more eager for May 9th to arrive.

On May 9, fans are eagerly anticipating Taylor Swift’s next Eras Tour concert in Paris, France. They are excitedly speculating that she will incorporate her new album into her already incredible set.

For the love of vinyl

Swift has been actively promoting her latest creation, from “Fortnight” to “The Manuscript,” through various partnerships. The release has been extensively covered in the news and flooded social media. Spotify even set up a library pop-up in Los Angeles, filled with hidden surprises. Swift achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first artist to reach a billion streams on the platform within just five days. Apple Music also got in on the action by featuring a game where devoted Swifties could decipher lyrics for a secret code, leading them to the opening line of “How Did It End?”: “We hereby conduct this post mortem.” The streaming service proudly announced on Twitter that the album broke the record for the biggest debut-day streams of any pop album in history.

Taylor Swift has broken her own record for vinyl sales, selling an impressive 859,000 copies of her latest album. This surpasses her previous record of 693,000 copies for “1989 (Taylor’s Version).” One key factor in this historic achievement is the release of four different vinyl variants, which undoubtedly added to the appeal for collectors and fans alike.

Solo artist with winning streak

In 2024, Taylor Swift surpassed the King of Rock and Roll as the solo artist with the highest number of weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart.

On New Year’s Eve, Billboard announced that “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” has maintained its position at number one, allowing Taylor Swift to surpass Elvis Presley’s record of 67 weeks with a total of 68 weeks. With her latest release, “The Tortured Poets Department,” Swift now has a remarkable 70 weeks at the top spot. It’s worth noting that The Beatles hold the record with an impressive 132 weeks at number one.
