Police charged a Bronx mother with murder in the violent beating death of her 6-year-old daughter, who, according to neighbors, begged for her life before her shocking death.
Lynija Eason-Kumar, 23, was arrested Thursday in connection with the early-morning death of toddler Jalayah Eason on May 26, 2023, inside the family’s dismal flat at NYCHA’s Forest Houses, authorities said.
According to sources, the mother first told police that she discovered the girl cold and unresponsive inside a closet in their 12th-floor flat on East 165th Street.
Eason-Kumar stated she tried CPR, but Jalayah did not wake up, according to investigators.
After 15 minutes, EMS arrived and took the young girl, who had visible bruising and injuries on her wrists and body, to Lincoln Medical Center, but they were unable to save her.
Jalayah died as a result of suffocation and blunt force trauma, officials revealed Thursday.
Dennis Rivera, an upstairs neighbor, previously told The Post that he heard the 6-year-old daughter “screaming for her dear life” during the early morning beating.
“At 3:42 a.m., that girl was screaming,” Rivera explained.
“She screamed for her life… She screamed like hell.”
“She repeatedly said, ‘Stop, stop, stop.’ “You could hear the thumps, brother.”
According to police sources, there were multiple calls for domestic violence at the family’s address.
Allegations of causing harm to her other two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, led to Eason’s previous arrest.
According to a criminal complaint filed in connection with the case, the two children had wounds, scars, and rashes when officers arrived at their residence on May 26.
The 8-year-old had “countless small lacerations in various stages of healing on his back, scalp, arms, and legs,” according to Hernandez.
The youngster apparently had a cut on his forehead and a deep, partially healed gash on his scalp.
The girl had a “long, discolored scar” on her waist and a “widespread discolored rash to her inner thighs and buttocks,” according to Hernandez.
The lawsuit also revealed disgusting information about the dirty, insect-infested residence.
That case remains pending in Bronx Criminal Court.
We scheduled her arraignment on the new charges, which include manslaughter, for Thursday.
