According to historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the United States is currently facing a moral crisis due to the political divisions within the country.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the speaker expressed the belief that society has become passive observers of our own lives. She drew inspiration from Dante’s words, emphasizing the importance of taking a stance during times of moral crisis. According to her, remaining neutral or silent in such situations is akin to inhabiting the lowest level of Hell.

Goodwin is a prolific author known for her biographies on past presidents like Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Currently, she is actively promoting her latest book, “An Unfinished Love Story,” which delves into her and her husband’s personal experiences during the 1960s.
Welker highlighted that Goodwin drew a comparison between the present political climate and the expansion of slavery and the Civil War in the 1850s. Goodwin pointed out two specific parallels she observed in relation to the Civil War era. These include the division within the media and concerns about a peaceful transition of power.
She expressed her concern about the potential lack of a peaceful transition of power following the upcoming presidential election.
“I have my concerns about whether it will actually happen, but deep down, I believe that if the majority of individuals who hold different values from the current system actively participate in voting, it can make a significant impact,” she expressed.
“I sincerely hope that voters realize the significance of this election and understand that their participation can make a difference. It is crucial for those who are still undecided or on the fence to come out and cast their vote. Regardless of the outcome, we must respect and accept the results of the election. While it’s uncertain how events will unfold, a strong voter turnout may lead to a more decisive outcome than anticipated. Ultimately, it will provide us with a clear and definitive choice for the future,” she later emphasized.
