Kansas City Chiefs kicker, Harrison Butker, expressed his strong opinions on various topics during a commencement address at Benedictine College last weekend. He openly criticized Pride month, the role of working women, President Biden’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the issue of abortion.
On Saturday, the Catholic private liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas, located about 60 miles north of Kansas City, was graced with a 20-minute address by the three-time Super Bowl champion.
Butker, a known advocate of conservative Catholic beliefs, opened his speech by criticizing what he referred to as “harmful gender ideologies.” This seemingly alluded to Pride month, an annual celebration held in June since the historic Stonewall riots in 1969. Furthermore, he expressed disapproval of an article published by The Associated Press, which highlighted a growing trend towards conservatism within certain factions of the Catholic Church.
28-year-old Butker criticized Biden’s policies, including his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in the loss of nearly 1.2 million lives in the United States, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to him, although COVID may have had a significant impact on your developmental years, it is not an isolated phenomenon. He argues that flawed policies and ineffective leadership have had adverse effects on crucial aspects of life. He cites examples such as abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, and the increasing acceptance of degenerate cultural values and media, all of which can be traced back to the prevalence of chaos in society.
Butker later spoke directly to the women in the audience, emphasizing that their most significant role should be that of a homemaker.
Butker emphasized that women have been subjected to numerous false narratives. He acknowledged that while some may pursue successful careers, the majority are most enthusiastic about their future marriages and the prospect of raising children. Butker shared his own personal experience, highlighting that his wife, Isabelle, firmly believes that her life truly began when she embraced her role as a wife and mother.
During his speech, the kicker from Decatur, Georgia, also referenced a line from Taylor Swift’s song “Bejeweled” to connect with the graduating class.
Quoting Travis Kelce, my teammate’s girlfriend accurately points out that “familiarity breeds contempt,” as shared by Butker.
The kicker has received criticism for the speech.
OutSports expressed their disdain for an NFL player’s offensive speech, highlighting the fact that he quoted a Taylor Swift song before promoting traditional gender roles for women.
On social media, Justice Horn, a former Kansas City commissioner, expressed their thoughts regarding Harrison Butker’s representation of the city. They stated, “Harrison Butker doesn’t represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members.”
The Chiefs chose not to provide any comments concerning Butker’s commencement address.
Kansas City Chiefs’ seventh-round pick from Georgia Tech in 2017, Harrison Butker, has established himself as one of the top kickers in the NFL. In 2022, he shattered the franchise record for the Chiefs by booting a remarkable 62-yard field goal. Butker’s contributions were instrumental in the Chiefs’ triumph in Super Bowl LIV after a 50-year drought, and he played a crucial role in securing their second Lombardi Trophy in 2023. Notably, Butker’s clutch field goal in February forced overtime in a Super Bowl victory against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Chiefs have had a rather embarrassing offseason.
In Jackson County, Missouri, a ballot initiative aimed at funding a downtown ballpark for the Royals and an $800 million renovation to Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs, was met with strong opposition from voters last month. The plan proposed by the Chiefs was widely criticized for its perceived focus on VIPs and the wealthy.
In the same week, wide receiver Rashee Rice surrendered himself to the Dallas police on several charges, including aggravated assault, following his involvement in a high-speed crash that resulted in injuries to four individuals. Rice has admitted to being the driver of one of the sports cars that was traveling at a speed exceeding 100 mph. Video evidence shows him leaving the scene without offering any information or checking if anyone required medical assistance.
According to The Dallas Morning News, law enforcement officials last week revealed suspicions that Rice had assaulted an individual at a downtown nightclub. However, Dallas police did not publicly identify Rice as the suspect when providing details of the incident to The Associated Press.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid addressed the situation by confirming that he has personally spoken with the receiver. He emphasized the team’s decision to allow the legal process to unfold before making any further judgments or actions.
