John Legend asserts that former President Trump is a racist at his very core.
During a conversation with MSNBC’s Jen Psaki on Sunday, John Legend discussed Trump’s handling of the Black Lives Matter protests that ensued after the tragic murder of George Floyd in 2020.
Legend expressed his perspective on the matter, stating, “During our protests against the tragic death of George Floyd, he openly endorsed the idea of the military using violent force against us. It is evident that throughout his life, he holds deep-seated beliefs that Black people are inferior, and this conviction runs through his very being.”
According to then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper, Trump inquired in 2020 whether authorities could shoot protesters in the legs during the nationwide unrest. Gen. Mark Milley, who served as the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2020, additionally revealed to The Wall Street Journal that Trump’s approach to dealing with protesters involved wanting law enforcement to “crack their skulls.”
Throughout his political career, Trump has been repeatedly accused of racism. When he launched his 2016 campaign, he made derogatory remarks about immigrants, labeling them as criminals and “racists.” In a more recent incident, he even speculated that African Americans support him more because of his criminal indictments.
During a speech in South Carolina in February, President Trump acknowledged the support he received from the black community. He stated, “And a lot of people said that’s why the Black people like me, because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against. It’s been pretty amazing, but possibly, maybe, there’s something there.” Trump expressed his appreciation for the African American community’s backing and recognized the shared experiences of discrimination.
Legend mentioned on Sunday that Trump had a history of refusing to rent units in his buildings to Black Americans, as documented by the FBI in 2011.
Trump has made the assertion that he was the most exceptional president for African Americans. He has highlighted the Black unemployment rate during his administration, the allocation of funds for historically Black colleges and universities, and the successful implementation of criminal justice reform during his tenure.
Legend, however, dismissed these comments, specifically addressing claims of Trump’s accomplishments in criminal justice reform. He highlighted the fact that Trump had previously advocated for shoplifters to be “shot on the spot.”
According to Legend, the individual in question is an unequivocal racist. Legend firmly believes that racism is deeply ingrained in this person’s character. Therefore, Legend refuses to lend any credibility to their claims about their supposed contributions to the Black community. In Legend’s view, this person has done very little to support and uplift Black people, and their core essence is undeniably rooted in racism.
John Legend, who actively supported President Biden’s campaign in 2020, recently announced his plans to hit the campaign trail once again later this year. According to Legend, the upcoming election presents a stark choice between the two candidates, emphasizing that the decision is “very clear.”
โIโm old enough to remember when Joe Biden stood on the Senate floor in 1993 and asserted that blacks were โpredatorsโ who could not be rehabilitated, or when he said he didnโt want his kids going to school in a โracial jungleโ or that Black parents โcouldnโt read or write,’โ Trump campaign senior advisor Lynne Patton said in a statement. โYou show me who sincerely believes blacks are inferior to their core โ and Iโll show you Joe Biden.โ
