A House resolution has been introduced by a Tennessee Democrat to censure Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. This comes after reports revealed that an upside-down flag was flown outside his residence shortly after the riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Rep. Steve Cohen, a member of the Judiciary Committee, introduced a censure resolution on Tuesday. The resolution accuses the individual of knowingly violating the federal recusal statute and binding ethics standards. Furthermore, it raises concerns about the individual’s impartiality towards the Supreme Court of the United States.
Alito denies any involvement in flying the upside-down flag outside his home in January 2021, attributing the act to his wife. According to him, his wife briefly displayed the flag in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.
The New York Times initially reported on the news about the upside-down flag, which has become synonymous with the “stop the steal” movement. This movement is rooted in unverified allegations of voter fraud during the 2020 election.
Democrats are expressing outrage over the incident, deeming the reports “alarming” and “appalling.” In addition, some Democrats are urging Justice Alito to recuse himself from cases related to the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection, including the ongoing presidential immunity case involving former President Trump.
Cohen criticized the incident, stating that it was a clear display of political bias on his part.
According to the lawmaker, the individual openly displayed a flag in front of their house to express support for the insurrectionists on January 6th. Furthermore, they are actively involved in legal proceedings concerning the 2020 election and the Insurrection, which directly violates the federal recusal statute and the ethics rules set by the Supreme Court.
According to the speaker, it is crucial to ensure accountability in order to maintain the integrity and impartiality of the High Court. Protecting the constitutional rights to fair and unbiased proceedings is of utmost importance. The speaker suggests that Justice Alito should face censure for blatant violations of the law and court rules. Furthermore, the speaker believes that Justice Alito should recuse himself from any future litigation related to the 2020 election and the events of January 6th.
