President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Sunday that Russia is prepared to escalate its onslaught along Ukraine’s northern border, as the death toll increased to 14 in an aerial bomb attack on a huge construction materials shop in Kharkiv.
According to Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov, the blast on Saturday afternoon injured 43 people and left 16 missing.
In a video message from Kharkiv, Zelenskyy claimed that Russia is planning military actions 90 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of Ukraine’s second-largest city. He stated that the Russians “gathered another group of troops near our border.”
Although he did not specify the location of the troop assembly, Ukrainian officials are deeply concerned about the Sumy region. Both Kharkiv and Sumy, which have a population of around 250,000, are around 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the Russian border.
Moscow’s troops have recently conquered villages in the Kharkiv area as part of a larger offensive, and observers believe they are attempting to reach within artillery range of the city. Ukrainian authorities have evacuated about 11,000 residents from the region since the offensive began on May 10.
Russian forces are launching offensive strikes along the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, with pitched fights in the Chasiv Yar direction of the Donetsk area, where “the intensity of hostilities is quite high,” according to a statement from Ukraine’s General Staff. “The defense forces are taking measures to prevent the enemy’s advance,” the statement read.
Russia launched widespread missile and drone attacks on Ukraine during the night. According to Ukrainian officials, air defense units intercepted 31 Russian-launched Shahed drones and 12 cruise missiles in Mykolaiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia, and Chernihiv regions.
According to a statement from Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched 14 missiles and over three dozen drones. It was unclear what harm missiles and drones that were not shot down could have caused.
The governor of Russia’s Belgorod area, located across the border from Ukraine, reported that Ukrainian attacks injured four people overnight. The Russian Defense Ministry reported the downing of seven drones over the Kursk region and three over Oryol, both located to the north of Belgorod.
