According to a recent poll conducted by ABC News/ Ipsos, 50% of Americans believe that the guilty verdict on all 34 counts in former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial was justified. Additionally, almost an equal percentage, 49%, feel that he should put an end to his 2024 presidential campaign due to the outcome.
According to the latest ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted using Ipsos’ KnowledgePanel, Trump’s favorability has remained stable at 31% following the historic criminal trial that ended this week with the first-ever conviction of a former president. Trump was found guilty of 34 counts on Thursday in his trial related to falsifying business records concerning a payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election to maintain her silence about their alleged affair.
On Friday, the former president expressed his determination to appeal, asserting that the case and charges brought against him were the work of “bad people.”
According to a recent survey, nearly half of Americans (47%) believe that the charges against Trump in this case were politically motivated. In contrast, 38% do not share this belief. Interestingly, a slight majority (51%) believe that Trump intentionally engaged in illegal activities in this case. On the other hand, 12% think that he did something wrong, but not intentionally, while 19% are of the opinion that he did not do anything wrong at all.
According to a recent poll conducted by ABC News/Ipsos, 49% of Americans believe that Trump should end his presidential campaign following the verdict. This percentage is consistent with the findings of a previous poll in April 2023, which revealed that 48% of respondents thought he should suspend his campaign due to the indictment handed down by the Manhattan grand jury.
According to the latest ABC News/Ipsos poll, President Biden’s favorability rating remains consistently low, with no change. Currently, his favorability rating stands at 32%, which is the same as the rating recorded in a March 2024 ABC News/Ipsos poll. The public’s response to Trump’s guilty verdict is largely divided along partisan lines. Among Democrats, 83% believe the verdict was correct, and 79% believe that Trump should end his campaign as a consequence. In contrast, only 16% of Republicans agree with the verdict, and the same percentage believes that Trump should withdraw from his presidential bid.
The election may ultimately hinge on independent voters, or more specifically, those who hold unfavorable views of both candidates, often referred to as double-haters. Given the widely held unfavorable opinions of Biden and Trump, these voters could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the election.
According to a recent survey, a majority of Independents, 52%, believe that Trump’s verdict was correct. Interestingly, the same percentage also feels that he should end his candidacy. These sentiments are even stronger among double-haters, with 65% of Americans who have an unfavorable view of both Trump and Biden agreeing with the verdict and 67% believing Trump should withdraw from the presidential race.
According to the latest statistics, there is a notable disparity in the perception of the hush-money trial being politically motivated. Among the various political affiliations, Independents and double-haters stand out with 45% and 51% respectively believing that the trial had political motivations. In contrast, a staggering 83% of Republicans and only 20% of Democrats share this view.
During the New York trial, Trump primarily directs his attacks towards the district attorney, the judge, and the jury, whom he alleges to be politically biased against him. Additionally, Trump baselessly accuses President Biden of orchestrating the prosecution.
During a press conference at Trump Tower in Manhattan, Trump expressed his concern over the actions taken against him, stating, “If they can do this to me, they can do this to anyone.” He described those involved as “bad people” and expressed his belief that many of them were “sick people.” Biden, in response, later emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and referred to statements questioning the legitimacy of the process as “dangerous.”
METHODOLOGY
The ABC News/Ipsos poll collected data from a random national sample of 781 U.S. adults between May 31 and June 1, 2024. The survey was conducted in both English and Spanish. The margin of sampling error for the full sample, including the design effect, is 3.7 points. It is important to note that sampling error is not the only factor contributing to differences in poll results. The partisan divisions for the sample are 31% Democrats, 29% Republicans, and 32% independents.
