Republicans are intensifying their calls to use the judicial system against Democrats, surpassing other suggestions for retaliation made since the guilty verdict. Some of these suggestions include calls for investigating the prosecutors in the Manhattan case or for voters to re-elect Trump in November as their own verdict.
Some Republicans are showing their loyalty to Trump by speaking out against his recent felony conviction. Trump has been calling the cases against him a form of partisan โelection interferenceโ and has been referring to President Joe Bidenโs administration as โevilโ and โcorrupt.โ These Republicans believe that the conviction, which was for falsifying business records to illegally influence an election, crossed a boundary in judicial norms.
Conservative talk show host Megyn Kelly expressed her thoughts on Trump’s guilt by stating that the line has been crossed and cannot be undone. She further added that the Democrats will regret their decision of using ‘lawfare’ to prevent a presidential candidate’s success. Kelly clarified that she is not advocating for violence, but rather a fair retaliation.
Brandon Gill, a Republican House candidate from Texas, expressed his disappointment with what he perceived as the use of “raw power” instead of an “equally applied legal system” in the charges filed against Trump. According to Gill, this situation reflects a “might makes right” mentality, and it is essential for Republicans to acknowledge this new reality and take appropriate action.
Amidst baseless claims by former President Trump and other Republicans that President Biden and his administration were controlling the New York trial, there has been a public outcry. It’s worth noting that the case was overseen by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a prosecutor at the state level.
During a fundraiser on Monday night in Connecticut, Biden spoke out against Trump’s attacks on the judicial system, calling them a threat to American democracy. He pointed out that the former president was convicted in a state case rather than a federal one. On Tuesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland dismissed the notion that the federal government was involved in a conspiracy theory during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. He labeled it an attack on the judicial process.
Republicans have argued that the case against Trump was politically motivated, citing several factors as evidence. Firstly, the current New York Attorney General, Letitia James, campaigned for office in 2021, partly on her ability to oversee the investigation into Trump. Another concern is that the presiding judge, Juan M. Merchan, donated $15 to Biden’s campaign in 2020 and has a daughter working in Democratic politics. However, Merchan has repeatedly stated that his political affiliations have not influenced his impartiality. Additionally, the prosecutor assigned to the case, Matthew Colangelo, joined Bragg’s office after serving in the Biden administration’s Department of Justice.
In interviews, Democratic members of Congress have criticized Republican suggestions to utilize the justice system to go after Democrats, deeming it as “reckless” and a potential threat to democracy. They argue that such a response is unnecessary given that Trump received a just trial by jury and retains the right to an appeal.
According to Democrat North Carolina Representative Deborah Ross, a jury of 12 individuals has unanimously determined that he committed 34 crimes without a doubt. She emphasizes that this is a significant difference from creating false accusations and having members of Congress arbitrarily decide who should be sued in frivolous manners.
According to Maryland Representative Glenn Ivey, who is also a member of the committee, there has been a trend of Democrats and Republicans prosecuting each other. However, he expressed his confidence that the cases will still be decided by jurors who are dedicated to fulfilling their responsibilities and making decisions based on the evidence and the law.
While Donald Trump is anticipating his sentencing next month, several notable Democrats are also facing highly publicized prosecutions. Senator Bob Menendez from New Jersey is currently on trial for federal bribery charges in New York, and Representative Henry Cuellar from Texas and his wife were recently indicted on conspiracy and bribery charges.
On Tuesday, Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden, faced charges in a federal case in Delaware related to his 2018 firearm purchase. He was charged with three felonies, which he allegedly committed during a time when he was struggling with a crack addiction, as he mentions in his memoir. The trial began with opening statements on Tuesday.
In the past, Trump has expressed varying opinions on whether it is appropriate to prosecute political adversaries.
Last August, during a campaign video, he urged Republican attorneys general and district attorneys to keep a close eye on the trials against him. He emphasized that it’s either an eye for an eye or fighting fire with fire. However, during a town hall meeting in February, he addressed concerns that his second term would be centered on settling old scores. He responded by saying that his revenge would be his success.
During an interview on Sunday, Trump was asked if he planned to seek revenge against the morning show โFox & Friendsโ. He appeared to struggle with the question, describing it as โreally toughโ due to his belief that the showโs hosts are โbad peopleโ. Trump went on to mention that during his presidency, he had the power to lock up Hillary Clinton, but chose not to do so.
He explained, “This experience happened to me, so my perspective on it may have changed.”
