First Lady Jill Biden is kicking her husband’s outreach to older voters, which will include rallies, phone banks, and social activities such as bingo evenings and pickleball tournaments.
President Joe Biden is in Italy for the Group of Seven summit, but the first lady will visit four swing states to kick off the Seniors for Biden-Harris campaign. Older people are more likely to vote than the typical American, and they account for a larger proportion of the population in some critical swing states. Biden, who outperformed past Democrats in the group in 2020, hopes to build on those advantages as his campaign aims to defeat former President Donald Trump, the Republican presumptive nominee.
Jill Biden will travel to Green Bay, Wisconsin; Duluth, Minnesota; Reno, Nevada; and Phoenix, according to the campaign. While her events will feel like typical rallies, the campaign also intends to use pickleball and bingo evenings to encourage older voters and keep them engaged as the campaign heads into November.
“Seniors are such a critical part of our coalition, and it is vitally important that we engage them this election cycle because they know President Biden is the only candidate in this race fighting for lower prescription drug and health care costs, and to protect and safeguard Medicare and Social Security,” Julia Chavez Rodriguez, the campaign manager for Biden, said. “Dr. Biden is both a trusted voice for seniors speaking to the issues that matter most to them and a galvanizing force to activate our supporters ahead of the election.”
For the majority of the past ten days, Jill Biden has been present at a federal courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware, lending her support to her son Hunter Biden, who received a conviction on federal gun charges on Tuesday. The swing marks her return to the campaign trail after a difficult time for her family.
